Video: Passersby try to rescue trapped elderly driver in aftermath of fatal three-car collision

Monday afternoon at the junction of Sengkang Central and Buangkok drive saw a tragic, chaotic scene in which eight people were left injured while an elderly man died following a three-car accident.

The accident reportedly occured around 12.30pm, involving a Volvo, a Hyundai and a taxi, according to The Straits Times. Joseph Lee, a motorist who was driving past the scene, stopped and helped. The 79-year-old man however remained trapped in the driver’s seat of his Hyundai sedan.

In the video uploaded on the Roads.sg Facebook page, you can see that passersby tried to render assistance to the elderly driver. Lee — who is medically trained — can be seen here getting ready an automated external defibrillator to revive the man trapped by the dashboard.

The Singapore Civil Defence Force responded to the incident and managed to extricate the man using hydraulic rescue tools — but was unfortunately pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics.

Seven casualties — including the man’s female passenger, believed to be his domestic helper — suffered injuries and were taken to hospital for treatment. One injured man refused to be sent.

Police investigations are ongoing.
