Video: Migrant workers react to bigoted online comments made by Singaporeans

Be prepared to get totes emosh. Since millennials and the like get off on seeing reaction videos (here’s why they’re fucking terrible), here’s one that actually has meaning and is worth the watch.

As a campaign that collects and shares stories of low-wage migrant workers here, Familiar Strangers have been operating much like the Humans of New York and Humans of Singapore, and generally raising awareness on their little-known personal lives.

In a highly effective method that humanises Singapore’s legion of faceless foreign labourers, Familiar Strangers lets them read the hurtful generalised statements made about them by locals. Quite remarkably, they don’t react with anger — more of confusion, disappointment and some sense of understanding why some Singaporeans don’t like them around. Check out the video below:

Migrant workers respond to comments made by Singaporeans

We often hear passing remarks being made about migrant workers, from the most unwelcoming ones to those of gratitude and appreciation. Some of which have even made its way online, sparking conversations and debates on social media and the Internet. But have we ever wondered how the workers would react to these comments when they see them?Editor’s Note: We would like to sincerely apologise for a mistake in the subtitles of the video, where Mr Xu Yi Wen’s name was spelled incorrectly as Mr Xu Wen.
