Video: Artist uses 15k torched bamboo chopsticks for Merlion mural in Facebook’s Singapore office

Facebook has a thing for murals in each of their offices across the world, and their Singapore chapter fares no different. With the amount of money they make off us though, the office decor oughta be as lavish and ornate as their daily revenue allows.

Enter Malaysian ‘Red’ Hong Yi, who was commissioned to create a mural on a 10 meter-long wall for the Singapore office — specifically requested to use chopsticks, considering that the space is right beside their in-house café. It’s an apt request too, especially since her pieces and art installations typically consist of everyday, common materials.

“I wanted to explore bamboo chopsticks as a material and experiment with alternative methods to create murals, so instead of painting on the wall, I decided to set it ablaze,” said Hong Yi. And so she did, using 15,000 bamboo chopsticks that were glued, torched, layered and burnt again into something that depicts Singapore’s national icon: the Merlion. Watch her do her magic below:

If you liked that display, check out what Hong Yi did for the World Economic Forum’s Malaysia Night last year, when she used 20,000 teabags to form a portrait of a teh tarik man.
