First world problem: URA needs ideas for overlooked public spaces

It’s time to put your creative thing caps on.

The Urban Redevelopment Authority wants brilliant ideas on what to do with Singapore’s underused or overlooked public spaces like gaps between buildings, hidden laneways and forgotten backlanes.

Up to 10 winners will win $1,000 in cash.

“The URA is looking for ideas that can creatively transform these spaces, making them inviting and accessible for the community. The public should also consider how their ideas relate to the surrounding context, and whether they can be easily implemented and sustained in the long run,” it explained in a news release.

Successful entries from previous years’ efforts include transforming the Sultan Gate open space in Kampong Glam into a “Picnic in the Park” with picnic benches, garden swings and colourful lanterns.

Participants who are interested in this year’s competition can submit their entries between May 14 and Jun 26 via ura.sg/myideas2015.

Vegetable gardens! Airconditioned lounges! Tree houses! Or you can just leave them alone. The possiblities are endless, dear Coconauts.
