URA to launch initiative that will close roads in CBD every last Sunday of the month

You can look forward to roaming the roads of Singapore’s Civic and Central Business Districts with nary a car in sight when the Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA) launches their monthly “Car-Free Sunday” initiative.

For six months starting from February 2016 onwards, URA is implementing full road closures around the Padang and partial road closures along Fullerton Road, Shenton Way and Robinson Road for you to roam freely, Channel NewsAsia reports. Not everyday mind you, just the last Sunday of each month.

The partial road closures will also allow bus services to run through their usual routes to minimise any public transport disruption.

According to URA, the proposed route stretches 4.7km, and will only go on between 7am to 9am on each of the Sunday mornings. Cycle, jog, walk, dance all you want — URA’s aim for the initiative is to promote active lifestyles and enhance liveability in the city.

There’ll also be community and mass exercise activities at the Esplanade Park and Empress Lawn in conjunction with the initiative, if you’re into that sort of thing.
