Unscrupulous retailers at Sim Lim Square will get CCTVs installed in front of their shops

It’s been a couple of months since the Jover Chew saga wrecked the halls of Sim Lim Square and social media, but the stigma of unscrupulous and dastardly retailers at the tech shopping mall remains.

The Straits Times reports that the methods to combat such errant dealings are being stepped up —the management of Sim Lim Square recently passed a by-law which gives them authority to install CCTV cameras and an audio recording device in front of shops that have had complaints lodged against them.

There would also be an implementation of stickers in the common areas in front of these shops that would inform consumers to be wary of the retailers.

Stores that have at least three complaints reported against them with the Consumers Association of Singapore (CASE) and the Singapore Tourism Board (STB) will see the implementation of the new overseer measures.

Since the antics of Jover Chew in his now-shuttered Mobile Air shop surfaced to nationwide renown last November, the Government has reported been working towards strengthening consumer protection. The issue of errant retailers at the mall has improved as well ever since — Case has been handling much lesser customer complaints against stores in Sim Lim Square.

In any case, the management of Sim Lim Square can easily purchase CCTV cameras and audio recording devices from their own mall, and that would really be meta.
