‘Unlucky Plaza’ gets theatrical run in New York and Los Angeles next month

Funny, gripping, and probably one of the best films to come out from Singapore, comedy-thriller Unlucky Plaza was a hit when it was released in theatres here for a 15-week run. The film is now being prepped for theatrical release in the United States, mainly in New York City and Los Angeles next month. Right on.

Unlucky Plaza is a refreshing, unique, and very well-made film that is also bold in its exploring long suppressed social schisms in Singapore. We are ‘lucky’ to being part of its international launch in fact we can’t wait to bring it to our audiences in North America,” says Donald Rabinovitch, Executive Vice President of Cinemaflix Entertainment, the film’s U.S distributor, who saw Kwek’s debut feature play to sold out audiences at the Toronto International Film Festival. “We are already anticipating Kens’ next film”.

The film will screen in Manhattan’s Cinema Village from Jan 8 to 15 and later on at Beverly Hills’ Lammie Music Hall from Jan 15 to 21.

Unlucky Plaza centres on the misfortunes of emigrant Onassis Hernandez, played by acclaimed Filipino actor Epy Quizon and how he bungles his way through a tricky situation that involves the ensemble of top Singapore thespians like Adrian Pang, Shane Mardjuki, Judee Tan, and more. Great cast, great film, let’s hope the audiences in the US take to some of our local fare. Here’s to another big step in Singapore cinema.
