In what is believed to be the third case of fatality involving Uber cars in Singapore, a man was declared dead at the scene of an accident along Xilin Avenue, where an Uber driver crashed into a tree.
According to The Straits Times, the Toyota Vios had skidded on the slip road into East Coast Parkway towards the Marina Coastal Expressway at about 7:30am on Sunday, following a heavy downpour.
The crash left the 31-year-old passenger dead, with Lianhe Wanbao reporting that the victim suffered a fractured skull. He had been sitting in the backseat of the car.
The 22-year-old Uber driver however was not injured in the accident. He was arrested for causing death by a negligent act, according to the police.
Responding to media queries, Uber expressed their sadness about the tragic accident, and will support the deceased’s family as well as cooperate with the authorities in their investigations.
Earlier this year, two drivers under their ride-hailing service were convicted for causing deaths. On Feb 10, one Uber driver was jailed for six weeks and banned from driving for five years after an accident on the Seletar Expressway killed a teenage passenger and injured a van driver. Another Uber driver was fined $7,000 and banned from driving for five years after killing a pedestrian in Hougang.
