Typhoon Haiyan: Singapore launches relief efforts + how you can help

Following the devastation brought about by Typhoon Haiyan (Yolanda), the Singapore government has donated a total of SGD200,000 through the Singapore Red Cross (SRC) to kickstart apublic appeal for more funds.

Funds raised will be used to provide basic necessities such as clean water, shelter, blankets, sleeping mats and mosquito nets to victims of the Typhoon. Medical and health services will also be provided and the SRC will be sending a team down to the affected areas to aid relief efforts on Thursday, Nov. 14.

Lim Theam Poh, deputy secretary general of the SRC said in a statement that the SRC has received nearly a hundred phone calls and emails from members of the public expressing their concerns and interest to help in one way or another.

To facilitate public donations, the SRC will be extending its operating hours with effect from Tuesday, Nov. 12.

Here’s how you can help: Visit the Red Cross House at 15 Penang Lane, Open Mon — Fri 9am — 7pm (extended), Sat — Sun 9am — noon (extended) with your donation or post your cheque to the Red Cross House addressing it to the “Singapore Red Cross Society”. Indicate “Red Cross Haiyan Relief” on the back of your cheque, along with your name, contact number and address. You can also call 6664-0500 to register with the volunteer team or 6664-0501/0502 if you need help locating a missing family member.
