Two underpasses in Novena area to be demolished for upcoming North-South Corridor

If you haven’t been to the Novena malls or MRT station in a while, the next time you go, you might notice something different. It seems two underpasses in the area will cease to exist to make space for construction work on the upcoming North-South Corridor, which will start next year. One of them links Velocity @ Novena Square with Revenue House, where government agencies like the Inland Revenue Authority of Singapore and the Singapore Land Authority are located, and the other connects Novena MRT station to Goldhill Centre on Thomson Road.

A spokesman for the Land Transport Authority told The Straits Times that “LTA is studying various options to reconstruct the underpasses as part of the upcoming project,” and things are still in the “preliminary stage”. But one thing’s for sure — the linkways will be temporarily affected by the construction work in the area.

So for those who walk that way regularly, you’ll soon have to find other above-ground crossings to get to your destination. And hopefully the reconstruction of the underpasses will result in more user-friendly elements, especially for the elderly, the disabled and those riding on bikes.

As for the 21.5km-long North-South Corridor, also known as Singapore’s first integrated transport corridor, the entire project is expected to be completed in the not-so-near future, in 2026.
