Two musicals about Lee Kuan Yew will show in Singapore next year as part of the city-state’s 50th birthday celebrations.
Local theatre company Metropolitan Productions hopes that centering an opera piece around the iconic leader will draw more people to the art and is working with award-winning performer and composer Dick Lee, as well as Singapore Repertory Theatre founder Tony Petito, to produce the music and script. A Different Sky author Meira Chand, who is also on the project, described the initiative as a “great narrative” that “needs to be written”. She called the musical a “legacy project”.
The second play inspired by Singapore’s former minister mentor is commissioned by Capital Investment Holdings and is rumoured to be the first act to show at the Capitol Theatre when it reopens next year.
