Two international fashion brands to exit local retail scene by end of year

With the ever-changing retail scene in Singapore, it seems no one is safe. Sure, there’ve been expansions and new labels popping up — Japanese chain Uniqlo, for one, will not stop till it has a store on every corner — but there’ve also been plenty of shops closing their shutters for good. Recently, the Dubai-based conglomerate Al-Futtaim Group, who owns names like Robinsons, Marks & Spencer, Ted Baker, Mango and Bershka, announced the impending closure of ten of unnamed stores here. Even beloved local vintage shop Granny’s Day Out is bowing out after 11 years of operations.

Two more will soon join the list of shops that once graced our shores. British brand New Look and French menswear label Celio, from distributor Jay Gee Melwani Group, will close eight stores by the second half of the year, due to high costs and low sales. Staff members affected by the change will have the option of being transferred to other names under the group like Aldo, Levi’s, Dockers, Aeropostale and Converse.

If you’re a fan of either of these brands, now’s the time to get your shopping fix before it’s too late.
