Tragic: Man drowns in Sungei Api Api canal while trying to untangle fishing line

A dreadful accident at the Sungei Api Api canal yesterday afternoon left an angler drowning in the waters near Pasir Ris Park.

Reportedly, he went into the canal to untangle a fishing line that had gotten caught, but struggled in the water before going under, according to eyewitnesses speaking to The Straits Times. Relatives later identified the man as Syed Shafiq Syed Peer.

Rescuers from the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) were sent to the scene as divers and amphibious vehicles were deployed to search for the man. He was found later on around 5.50pm and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The case has since been classified as an unnatural death, and the police are conducting further investigations.
