Police have arrested seven people suspected of stealing grocery vouchers from mailboxes in five neighborhoods.
Multiple arrests have been made since Sunday, the police said yesterday, adding that two of the suspects will be charged in court today with theft while they continue to investigate the remaining five. Four were men, and three were women.
“The Police have arrested four men and three women, aged between 23 and 54, for their suspected involvement in separate cases of theft of Budget 2020 Grocery Vouchers from HDB letterboxes at different locations in Singapore,” police said in yesterday’s statement.
Stacks of 15 grocery vouchers, each worth S$10, were handed out by the government to low-income residents earlier this month as part of COVID-19 financial aid. Police said that there were complaints of stolen vouchers from mailboxes in Toa Payoh, Tampines, Marsiling, Telok Blangah and Buona Vista.
The duo set to be charged are a 24-year-old man and 23-year-old woman. They were nabbed Wednesday for allegedly stealing vouchers from mailboxes at a public housing block at Tampines Street 86. They face jail terms and fines if convicted.
Others arrested included a man and a woman in their 40s suspected of similar thefts at Marsiling Road; two men in their 50s for cases near Telok Blangah Rise and Holland Close, respectively; as well as a 37-year-old woman related to an incident at Toa Payoh Lorong 7.
Eligible citizens are expected to receive S$400 worth of the Budget 2020 grocery vouchers over the course of three months starting with S$150 this month. They can be used at major supermarket chains including FairPrice, Giant, and Sheng Siong.
