There’ll be a silent #NotMyPresident sit-in protest this Saturday at Hong Lim Park

The growing sentiments against the easy walkover in the presidential elections has spilled out into real life. All those who are really, truly upset that Halimah Yacob will become Singapore’s president by default (because she’s the only one who’s certified eligible enough) can silently protest together at Hong Lim Park this Saturday.

Organized by political activist Gilbert Goh, the event will be a silent sit-in to protest against the contentious reserved presidential election. This, even though the election is non-existent, because only one candidate was officially qualified enough to run for office. Robbed of the ability to even choose Singapore’s next head-of-state (and upset that all the motions seemed like a charade by the ruling government), #NotMyPresident has started to trend across social media.

Goh has called on folks to unite at his event this Saturday afternoon, which he assures he received the proper approval from the National Parks Board for. But don’t expect any rousing speeches to be held (due to the sensitivities in speaking about racial matters) — Goh just wants people to sit down silently together in the park for two hours as a form of protest.

“Fear has crippled you all this while you are burnt up inside and it’s time to unleash that frustration by showing up with like-minded Singaporeans together as ONE voice”, he wrote on the Facebook event page, rather dramatically.

As of writing, only 22 people have confirmed their attendance to the protest. But then again, there won’t be much to protest by the time Saturday arrives; Halimah Yacob will already have become Singapore’s first female president by then.
