Talk of personal mobility devices (PMDs) like e-scooters and e-bikes has dominated conversations for a while now, ever since these gadgets zoomed onto our roads and caused reckless accidents, cruised illegally on highways, and finally had to be registered with the authorities.
Now the latest news, thanks to a Facebook post by Transport Minister Khaw Boon Wan, is about how someone got a little too excited with their e-scooter modifications and ended up with one that weighed a whopping 92kg.
If that doesn’t mean anything to you, just know that it’s way above the maximum allowable weight of 20kg, and it’s the heaviest e-scooter seized by the Land Transport Authority (LTA) to date. (Previously, that title went to a 64kg one seized during enforcement operations.)
Apparently, Khaw visited an LTA vehicle pound over the weekend to look at impounded power-assisted devices that were stored for investigations. Some of the PMDs were seized for speeding, while others were obviously illegally modified.
And for those who think the rules are strict enough as they are, take a deep breath, ’cause Khaw mentioned that the authorities are tightening enforcement and will continue to promote responsible riding (even though he acknowledged that changing habits would take some time).
Look through photos of Khaw gazing seriously at the PMDs below.
Meanwhile, several netizens commented that the 20kg weight limit wasn’t the most realistic and requested for the authorities to review the regulations.
