Congrats are in order for Team Singapore, which clinched seven gold, six silver, and seven bronze medals at the 18th World Pencak Silat Championship. Held on our shores over the weekend, the competition was the best-ever performance for our country.

Besides the three golds won in the artistic category earlier in the tournament on Thursday, the finals at OCBC Arena on Sunday saw four out of the eight Singaporeans emerge victorious. Sheik Ferdous, the son of local Silat icon Sheik Alau’ddin, was the first from Team Singapore to beat his opponent in Class I (85-90kg), while his brother Sheik Farhan later claimed his third world title — on his birthday, no less — by defeating Phan Khac Troung from Vietnam in Class J (90-95kg).

Meanwhile, Nurul Suhaila took home her first world title after prevailing over her opponent Janejira Wankrue from Thailand with a score of 5-0 in Class D (60-65kg), and the team’s youngest, 17-year-old Muhammad Hazim Mohd Yusli contributed the last gold medal of the weekend in Class B (50-55kg).

Co-organized by Singapore Silat Federation and Aladdin Street Singapore, this year’s competition, which marks the third time hosting for Singapore, saw more than 300 athletes from over 40 countries participate.
