Tanjong Pagar Terminal, Singapore’s very first container terminal, is shifting over core port operations to Pasir Panjang Terminal, as its lease expires in 2027. When it opened 45 years ago, it was the first such facility in Southeast Asia — but now that operations are winding down, PSA Singapore relocated all 500 staff from the terminal earlier this year to Pasir Panjang.
Tanjong Pagar Terminal is currently handling ancillary services, like bringing in vehicles, for example.
“We have to keep raising our game particularly in harnessing technology to enhance productivity,” Coordinating Minister for Infrastructure and Transport Minister Khaw Boon Wan explained. “PSA is testing electric automated guided vehicles, and automated wharf and yard operations at the Pasir Panjang Terminal.”
The Pasir Panjang Terminal will handle most of Singapore’s shipments for the next two decades, as the Tuas port will only be operationally ready from 2021 and fully ready by 2040.
To commemorate the “end of an era”, as termed by Khaw, PSA Singapore hosted an event on Monday to honor PSA pioneer workers for their contributions over the decades.
It was at this event that a Guinness world record for the Largest Shipping Container Image was achieved. The lion head display, made out of 359 containers across 128 sqm, took 15 hours to complete, The Straits Times reported. A certificate from the Guinness Book of World Records was officially given to PSA at the terminal.
Watch how it all came together.
