Tanjong Pagar Railway Station to close in Dec 2016, reopen in 2025 as Cantonment MRT

The former Tanjong Pagar Railway Station, a heritage landmark that crowds flock to every public holiday, will sadly be closed by the end of this year. December 26, to be exact. But not to worry, it’ll remain open every public holiday until Christmas day, so you’ll have a few more opportunities to visit, reminisce and take a couple more selfies before the historic space transforms into Circle Line 6 Cantonment MRT station in 2025.

The train platform’s canopy structures will be dismantled and repaired, then reinstated after the completion of Cantonment station, to preserve the heritage and memories of the area. Basically, this means Cantonment MRT will be integrated with the existing railway station building — a mix of old and new. And as part of the Urban Redevelopment Authority’s plans for the Rail Corridor, Tanjong Pagar Railway Station will continue to be used as a multi-functional community building for two decades after the new station is built.
