It’s known that the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) equips its servicemen and women with a wide array of skill sets to deal with situations both in and out of war. As Singapore generally enjoys political stability within the international community, some skill sets are utilised less (read: the least glorified but no less important Infantry vocation), while others are valued highly due to their life skills potential.

Indeed, just ask this team of medics who were stationed at Pulau Tekong, where they managed to resuscitate 55-year old Phua Yong Teck, who collapsed from a cardiac arrest while working as a contractor there.

The aforementioned team of medics, 1 Medical Squadron, swiftly transported him to Rocky Hill Medical Centre to perform an emergency resuscitation on him, before transferring him over to Singapore General Hospital’s Intensive Care Unit.

Earlier today, Defence Minister Ng Eng Hen has confirmed that Phua has – thankfully – survived. Although it has to be noted that his first week in the ICU was a “touch and go,” which made Mrs Phua and their son Joshua live through a torturous period as doctors feared Mr Phua “may never fully recover and risk[ed] brain damage.”

Showcasing the medics in action while on training, Dr Ng added that it was regular training and constant simulated drill sessions that enabled the team of medical officers and their medics to respond quickly when an actual situation called for it.
