Subhas had unswerving belief in granting accused second chance in life: Mr. Shanmugam

Singapore’s Minister for Foreign Affairs Mr. K. Shanmugam paid tribute today to Singapore’s most famous criminal defence lawyer Mr. Subhas Anandan, who died this morning at Singapore General Hospital from heart failure.

Mr. Shanmugam described him as his “dear friend and fellow lawyer”, “described by many as a titan in criminal law”.

“Subhas’ name is synonymous with tenaciouness in court, a sharp intellect and above all, a generous heart. Subhas’ strong sense of justice, has made him a legal legend to the Bar as well as general public.”

Mr. Shanmugam also noted his “unswerving belief in fair representation for the accused, and granting them a second chance in life”, which makes him “an inspiring role model for the rest of the Criminal Bar”.

Mr. Subhas Anandan had a prolific career. He represented some of the city’s most notorious criminals and is known for his stand for pro bono services.

“My heart is filled with sadness with Subhas’ passing,” said Singapore’s law minister. “Many will join me in extending our deepest condolences to his family during this difficult time, and would like them to know that the legal fraternity grieves with them.”

And indeed, many have, at least on social media. “Subhas Anandan” has been trending on Twitter since the news broke, with many in Singapore singing praises for the 67-year-old, who’s also a published author:
