The first ever Singapore Garden Festival (SGF) Orchid Show has debuted over the past weekend, and you have the rest of the week to stroll through more than 100 varieties of orchids at the National Orchid Garden and other areas of the Botanic Gardens.

Among the orchids on exhibit, standout ones include the Aranda Lee Kuan Yew, so named after Singapore’s founding Prime Minister, and the Limara Lim Lean Teng, named in honor of a philanthropic Malaysian businessman.

Alongside the display, the National Parks Board also announced the launch of the country’s first seed bank in the Botanic Gardens, to boost efforts in conserving orchids and native plants, as well as protect germplasm of threatened flora species in Southeast Asia. When it is established, the seed bank will be able to store up to 25,000 plant species.

But back to the Gardens. If you swing by this week, you’ll be treated to 17 landscape displays at the Orchid Plaza, including ones by local orchid growers and others from around the region.

For those who’d like to find out more about orchid breeding, the educational exhibition at Burkill Hall reveals the history of this industry that began in Singapore in the 1930s. Talks, demonstrations, workshops, and tours are also on the line-up, as well as a marketplace over the weekend for those looking to hone their green thumb.

The SGF Orchid Show is at the National Orchid Garden, daily 8:30am-7pm. Free for Singaporeans, $5 for international visitors. The main SGF is on from July 21 to Aug 3 at Gardens by the Bay.
