StarHub spokesman comments on Pokemon Go and mobile data; declares himself rarest Pokemon

We all know about the Pokémon Go craze and how everyone is obsessed over the game, yada yada. So when The Straits Times did a story on how the app affects data usage, we weren’t really paying attention to the usual PR quotes.

That is, until the last line. It was a total zinger. And it came out of nowhere.

But let us recap the article first. So ST was wondering out loud if mobile subscribers were gonna exceed their data limits this month, what with all the monster-catching activities going on. Singtel’s chief executive of consumer business in Singapore, Yuen Kuan Moon, said the app isn’t a ‘high data-generating’ one. Singtel group chief executive Chua Sock Koong did the vague thing by pulling out the ‘too early to comment’ remark.

Meanwhile, StarHub announced that the app takes up about 20MB for every hour you play it.

And now we’ve come to the best part.

A wild Philemon Foo appears. The StarHub corporate communications senior executive explained: ‘While it would be too early to come to a conclusion on mobile traffic, we know that Pokemon Go is not a mobile data hog.’

He then went on to add that he was, and we quote from ST, ‘undeniably the rarest Pokemon.’

Make of that what you will. We’ll get back to you once we stop laughing.
