Singapore’s city skyline looks stunning — we know the country’s worked hard at keeping it spiffy. But does it look out of this world? Westworld apparently thinks so, because eagle-eyed netizens seem to have spotted what looks like our Central Business District in the season three trailer of HBO’s sci-fi Western TV series.
Based on the 1973 film of the same name by Michael Crichton, the show is set in the fictional Westworld, a high-tech Wild West-themed amusement park where human guests can live out their wildest fantasies with the android “hosts.”
The appearance of Singapore in the clip is almost blink-and-you’ll-miss-it, but reddit user u/cherenkov_blue spotted the familiar sight at the 0:50 mark. Uploading a screenshot to the Singapore Reddit page, he explained that it was the “Maybank tower with the yellow banner” that stood out to him and prompted him to search for other landmarks like the UOB towers and HSBC building. If you scrutinize the image, it looks like a view of the Raffles Place area from across the Singapore River, he revealed.
Fellow redditor u/BT-Reddit said that the skyline could only be partly based on Singapore, starting from UOB Plaza One, with the image flipped laterally.
If you look at the actual city skyline below, it’s clearly not a complete fit, but hey, we’re cool enough to be sort of featured in Westworld, plus several anime works and, of course, Crazy Rich Asians.
The third season of Westworld will be released in 2020.
