Four cats were recently discovered on Pulau Hantu, according to local organization Cat Welfare Society. The uninhabited island south of mainland Singapore, which has no natural food source or fresh water, is only accessible by an hour-long boat ride — which means the felines were most probably abandoned there by their former owners. Not cool.

“These are living, domesticated animals with no hunting abilities,” said the Cat Welfare Society. “So they starved and scavenged at the peripheries for food.”

It was about six months ago that gardeners working on the island noticed two of the animals and started feeding them with bread and fish scraps from their lunches. Last month, another two cats were brought to the island and left to fend for themselves there, making it harder for the gardeners to feed all four cats.

Luckily, a visitor realized what was going on and notified the Cat Welfare Society, who sent a professional trapper and someone from the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) to head over to the island. They managed to catch the four felines and sent them to the vet to assess their health.

The cats were found to be malnourished and dehydrated, but they’ve since been sterilized and are currently recovering in a cattery while waiting to be rehomed, thanks to the kind souls who found them and nursed them back to health.
