All aboard the flame wars train — here’s another spectacle to watch unfold on social media. On one side of the ring is Emily Tan, a vlogger and avid #OOTD uploader on Instagram. On the other is Donovan Choy, a writer of satire news site Durian Daily and individual with Strong Feelings Against Influencers.
The straw that broke Choy’s Social Justice Warrior-hating back was when Tan departed from all her usual social media influencer shenanigans and preached justice for the wildlife suffering from the forest fires in Indonesia. No siree, let’s pause all the postings about wardrobe essentials, Lookbook looks, make-up tips and let’s get on fleek about social justice! Also, OMG u gaize, can we not use social media for materialism and narcissism? Chuhh~

Hoo boy, young Donovan Choy was not too happy about it. He goes all out and fuckin’ wrecks Tan over her post, calling it hypocritical and tells her to check her own privilege. #rekt #burn

Later on, his comment apparently got ‘auto-deleted’, but Tan defends herself, claiming that she does actually volunteer and donate to animal societies — but chooses not to publicise it. In turn, she calls Choy the “shallow minded hypocrite” who “opt to look on the surface”.

With no avenue to reply (because he got banned from Tan’s page), Choy took to his Facebook page to write a thorough dissection of her perceived hypocrisy in a very biting essay against her. And also all social media influencers in general.

Hours later, after presumably a truckload of hatemail and hatemessages, Choy writes another post about not giving a fuck about people like her, and who he actually gives a fuck about.

Say what you will, but eventually someone had to speak out about the bullshit industry and enablement Singapore’s social media influencers. We await Emily Tan’s response — meanwhile, please appreciate the astute hilarity of this comment.
