SMRT Goes Clean: Bishan train depot to be powered by solar energy by October

In a major step forward for utilising clean energy, give props to SMRT for their plan to run their Bishan MRT Depot on renewable solar energy by the end of the year.

In a partnership with clean energy provider Sunseap Leasing Pte Ltd, the largest rail depot in the country will see a 1 MegaWatt-peak solar photovoltaic system  installed on their rooftop. It’ll allow SMRT to reduce their carbon footprint by 553 tonnes of carbon dioxide annually — and under the right conditions, will generate electricity that can power 270 four-room HDB flats for a year.

“The initiative by SMRT is an important step contributing towards positive environmental impact,” says Sunseap director Frank Phuan. “We believe this move will encourage the other transport companies in Singapore to step up their sustainability efforts, especially with the Singapore Exchange’s sustainability mandate coming into effect in fiscal year 2017.”

Installation of the solar photovoltaic system will being in the third quarter of the year, and is expected to be operational by the end of October. SMRT will also be looking into the potential of implementing solar panels in above ground MRT stations.
