Experiencing the cooling temperature and the comforting sounds of heavy rain in the wee hours of the morning is absolutely perfect for those of us dozing peacefully in the warm comfort of our own beds. Alas, the same luxury is not afforded by those who toil away while we sleep: the engineers, technicians, and employees of SMRT working to maintain the railway tracks.
An SMRT track access manager provided some insight behind the scenes while working on the tracks in the early hours of Saturday morning — a period of intense, heavy rain. Despite being exposed to the harsh elements out in the open, the drenched workers had to remain calm and steady.
“We don’t dash or run for cover because it’s too risky to do that,” wrote the SMRT employee in a Facebook post that has since been taken down.
“With wet rail tracks, distance to station, lots of granites, etc — safety cannot be compromised. Fully drenched, no matter what we walk back. No rushing, no running. Safety comes first”.
One video uploaded showed the treacherous journey to the nearest shelter, as one would have to navigate slowly in the dark, with the wet, uneven ground making it even harder. Not to mention the lightning risk. Another clip captured during the downpour showed his colleagues being thoroughly doused in the rain, but remaining determined to get the job done. It’s unclear which MRT station the crew was working from.
