SMRT bus driver arrested in relation to tragic Jurong East accident

A 34-year-old Malaysian woman, who was driving the SMRT bus no. 187 that killed a 90-year-old pedestrian yesterday, has been arrested. 

TODAY reports that police are currently investigating the accident that occurred along Jurong East Avenue 1 towards Toh Guan Road. 

Eyewitnesses told the local daily the collision happened just before noon as the elderly man was crossing the road and that its impact cracked the windscreen of the bus. 

SMRT has expressed its condolences to the family of the deceased, saying it was co-operating with the police in investigations. 

“We have contacted Mr. Tan’s family and will render assistance as best as we can during this difficult time,” said Mr. Patrick Nathan, head of SMRT’s Corporate Information and Communications Division.
