Smoke fills up Changi Airport Terminal 2 departure hall; non-travelling people evacuated

Changi Airport staff are evacuating folks out of Terminal 2’s departure hall right now, with reports of smoke emerging with no verified origin.

A anonymous staff member of the airport informed Coconuts Singapore that a fire alarm went off around 5.30pm and everyone started evacuating out of the terminal soon after. They initially believed it was a fire drill, but the smell of smoke wafted in later on.

A roadblock has been set up, while police cars and fire engines have arrived at the scene.

CNBC reporter Saheli Roy Choudhury is at the scene, confirming that non-travelling patrons of the airport are being evacuated with “lots of smoke” at T2. Check in counters have shut down, and the cause of the emergency remains unknown.

Police confirmed on Twitter that fire broke out at Changi Airport’s Terminal 2, and advised folks to stay away.

 

UPDATE 1: Changi Airport has since identified the cause of fire and assures that the situation is under control. Flight operations at T2 however are affected right now, and the authorities are ushering people to Terminal 3.

UPDATE 2: Some passengers claim that there was a small fire at T2’s departure hall. SBS buses are skipping their T2 stops. Passengers are stuck on the runway, unable to alight the plane due to the emergency situation. The fire was extinguished at 7.08pm.
