SingNet fined SGD220,000, third time in two years

SingNet has been fined a total of SGD220,000 by the Media Development Authority (MDA) for the nine-hour island-wide Mio TV service disruption on May. 15 from 1am to 10am.

This is the third time SingNet has been fined in two years for its service disruptions and is the company’s biggest yet.

The disruption was said to have affected around 26,000 Mio TV subscribers across different parts of Singapore — some reported they could not boot up their Mio TV set-top boxes to watch their subscribed channels.

According to the investigations report, the incident was caused by a maintenance activity conducted between May. 14 and May. 15.

The maintenance, involving the replication of video-on-demand content to another server, had failed and attempts to recover the operation saw a wrong recovery command being keyed in by SingNet’s contractor. This led to subscribers’ set-top boxes failing to boot up properly.
