That’s a wrap for Singapore’s 68-member contingent that flew down to help victims of the Turkey-Syria earthquake last week.
The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) this morning said the Operation Lionheart team will be bidding their farewells and departing from Turkey later today after just more than a week of assisting with rescue efforts.
“Although the OLH contingent is leaving Türkiye, the people of Türkiye will always be in our hearts and minds 🇸🇬🤝🇹🇷,” it wrote.
At least 40,000 people died from the powerful 7.8 magnitude earthquake on Feb. 6.
Singapore deployed rescue-trained officers, paramedics and search specialists with their canine buddies to the site. They rescued a boy trapped under a collapsed 3-storey building and a man stuck under a large concrete slab of a 2-storey building.
SCDF said the contingent had met with Turkey’s National Medical Rescue Team and contributed medical supplies and necessities.
The Urban Search and Rescue suits worn by the Singapore team were given as gifts to Turkish responders to signify their “friendship and solidarity” with Turkey.
