The Singapore Islamic Scholars and Religious Teachers Association (PERGAS) has made it clear on their unquestionable stance against the Islamic State, calling out for local muslims to condemn and reject the extremist group in a recent media statement.
Expressing their extreme concern over the ongoing development of the Islamic State’s increasingly violent actions in Syria and Iraq, PERGAS emphasise that the radical beliefs of IS are against the teachings of Islam and should not be linked to the religion. The statement also declares the opposition of IS by Muslim scholars all around the world, with some even labelling them as a terrorist organisation.
PERGAS also offers guidelines for the local media and Muslim community, urging people not to refer to IS in its full designation ‘Islamic State’ or even as ‘Sunnis’ as the extremist group should be distanced from mainstream Islam as far as possible, while calling out for balanced approaches towards reports regarding IS by reminding that a majority of Muslims reject their ideas.
“PERGAS would also like call upon Muslims to hold true to the noble qualities taught in Islam, and to reject any form of extremism and acts of terror,” they wrote. “Extremism and terrorism do not originate from Islam”.
