Singapore’s first privately-managed hawker centre closes down

Kampung At Simpang Bedok — Singapore’s first privately-managed hawker centre — closed its doors to patrons last month.

According to Channel NewsAsia, social enterprise Best of Asia, which is owned by a Singaporean retiree, was having problems financing the hawker centre when business slowed down in April.

The enterprise located on the second level of Bedok Market Place suffered from lack of traffic, especially with all the food centres located in the vicinity.

It is also believed that the management at the same time took on huge losses from not being able to collect rent from start-up hawkers, some of whom even received salaries so their businesses could continue to grow.
