Singapore’s first president gets his name misspelled on SG50 commemorative note folder

Of all the typos to make, the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) just had to misspell the name of Singapore’s very first president Yusof Ishak in the folder that came together with the SG50 commemorative notes.

The accompanying document sought to explain the design of the special notes, but alas, a lack of proofreading has left our late president’s name to be known as “Yusok Ishak” instead. If it was proofread, and the person in charge really believed that was how it was supposed to be spelt, then that would be even sadder. Not to mention a grave disservice to the man.

The gaffe was made even more widespread as thousands of Singaporeans queued up to collect the SG50 commemorative notes across bank branches islandwide yesterday — so you can be sure that a lot of eyes were on that embarrassing mistake.

MAS managing director Ravi Menon issued a statement, wherein he finds the typo totally unacceptable and that it shouldn’t have happened in the first place, TODAY reports.

“I take full responsibility,” he said. “I apologise on behalf of my colleagues who worked hard to prepare the notes and folders, but are deeply disappointed that we made this most unfortunate mistake.”

The oversight will be rectified by using stickers that will be stuck over the error on the SG50 note folders from next Tuesday onwards.
