With Singaporeans looking for ways to save money, the demand for frozen chicken and pork — cheaper than their fresh counterparts — has been on the rise.

The price of frozen meat is easily 50 per cent lower than that of fresh meat with the price of frozen boneless pork loin from Brazil going at S$10.50 a kg as compared to the fresh version from Australia going at S$15.80 at Giant, Turf City outlet.

Frozen meat may also be more popular due to improvements in the freezing technology, which makes it safer to eat than fresh meat.

According to the Agri-Food & Veterinary Authority of Singapore (AVA), the process of freezing meat will prevent bacterial growth and slow down rancidity. As such, the quality of the meat will still be wholesome and fresh from six months to a year, depending on the type of meat.
