Communications and Information Minister S Iswaran said in parliament today that the government has agreed “in principle” to live-stream parliamentary debates, months after the matter was brought up.

Iswaran said that his ministry will study the technicalities and ways to implement the live-stream. He also cautioned parliamentary members against “playing to the gallery” to score brownie points during their debates as more people will be expected to watch them in action.

“An element of cut-and-thrust is unavoidable, because members want to show Singaporeans that their concerns are expressed, and questions asked and answered in Parliament,” he was quoted by national broadcaster CNA.

“However, members must come to grips with the issues and their complexities and not play to the gallery.  Live broadcasts risk compromising this. We still hold these reservations,” he added.

There sure have been some Hallmark moments in just the first week of parliament, with Manpower Minister Josephine Teo and Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong shedding tears during their speeches.

It is not clear when the live-stream is expected to be available to the public. Currently, Singapore’s mainstream media outlets, which are also state-affiliated, have access to parliament live feeds. A gallery at the Parliament House has been designated for members of the public to sit in. Speeches and transcripts from the debates are also posted online after a sitting.

With a record number of 10 opposition members taking seats in Parliament, it is not surprising that more are demanding a live broadcast.
