Singaporean students ranked third in the world for time spent on homework per week

In a verdict that surprised none, Singaporean students ranked third in the world in terms of the time spent on doing homework.

According to a study by the Organisation for the Economiv Cooperation and Development (OECD), Singapore’s 15-year-olds have been devoting almost nine and a half hours per week to homework, coming behind Russian students’ 9.7 hours. Unsurprisingly, the students of Shanghai top the world rankings, committing 13.8 hours a week on school assignments.

Five hours is the global average span for homework.

The report was based on results from a questionnaire in 2012 for the OECD Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA), a test conducted to measure academic achievement for 15-year-olds. Those who did more homework were found to have scored higher in the PISA test.

Students in Finland and South Korea have it relatively easier in regards to assignments — they only spend less than three hours each week on them.
