A photo of a supposedly Singapore dish made from a peculiar recipe online has been riling up local Redditors since yesterday.

Redditor Best-mango-YT, who wanted to boast about his attempt at making a “Singaporean rice” dish on a subreddit for rice, met with backlash from confused and disturbed Singaporeans who explained that the dish doesn’t actually exist in Singapore.

“This one [is] not Singaporean, this one [is] also not rice. This is a tragedy what happened to the food sia,” Wastingrice wrote.

Best-mango-YT said he followed a recipe from Food Fusion, a Pakistan-based cooking website, that features not just rice but also egg noodles as well as chicken and a variety of vegetables all topped with a sauce made primarily with ketchup and mayonnaise.

The website says the recipe was a “Quick and Easy Singaporean Rice Recipe with a little fusion” of their own.

“To be honest I really don’t know, I had watched a cooking video and found it interesting and shared my experience here, that’s it,” Best-mango-YT wrote, adding that he thought the dish tasted “very delicious.”

After receiving hate and being upset about getting “so many downvotes” on the post, the beleaguered OP said he respects Singapore’s culture and that he would delete the post soon.

“I had no intention of spreading misinformation. I had never thought that it will be troublesome for many people. I never imagined that sharing a homemade cooking experience will end this way. Sorry for the inconvenience that I caused,” he wrote.

Locals also tore the post apart when the photo was reposted to the Singapore subreddit last night, with some calling it “disgusting,” “shit” and an “abomination.”

“Although I blame the recipe, not you. There is plenty of good food in Singapore, but nothing even remotely resembling this,” Pawsowoar wrote.

“Singaporean Rice” is apparently a dish invented in Pakistan, with some saying the recipe was originally dreamed up by a wedding caterer in Karachi (who we’d have to guess had never actually been to Singapore).

In February, the New York Times was tormented by locals about its bizarre recipe for “Singaporean Chicken Curry” which was very different from the authentic versions found here. Even the creator of the recipe didn’t know how it ended up like that.
