A Singaporean holidaymaker tragically died after he went missing off Desaru Coast in Johor, Malaysia on Wednesday afternoon, sending shockwaves through the popular tourist destination.
Local authorities received information about the 49-year-old’s disappearance at 1:37pm, after he and his teenage son were enjoying some leisure activities at the beach.
“Reports from witnesses indicate that the man was swept away by strong currents and couldn’t be found,” revealed Masri Ibrahim, Operations Commander of the Penawar Fire and Rescue Department.
Sadly, he was found dead at 5:30am the next day, with authorities believing that he drowned.
“The body was found about 5 kilometers from where he was last seen and the victim was identified by his wife,” Masri told The Star.
The man’s 15-year-old son was rescued by bystanders before emergency personnel arrived. He has been taken to Hospital Kota Tinggi for medical attention.
According to Masri, red flags were displayed at the beach warning of dangerous water conditions, urging caution against swimming and water activities.
