Singaporean man falls to his death at Gunung Pulai waterfalls during attempt to save daughter

Tragedy unfolded yesterday when a Singaporean man fell to his death down a waterfall in Kulai, Johor, during an attempt to save his daughter.

The family were having a picnic with their relatives at the Gunung Pulai waterfall when the seven-year-old girl slipped and fell while climbing, according to various media reports. They had been hiking uphill, but took a steep terrain along a stream instead of the provided trekking route to the waterfalls.

Both parents also fell while trying to save their daughter. 47-year-old David Cho Kah Loong died after suffering serious head injuries when he fell from the 20-metre high ledge.

His wife — 46-year-old Chua Soon Hoon — and the daughter survived the fall, albeit sustaining serious injuries.

“When we arrived at the scene, there were three victims at the foot of the hill. Two of them, a woman and a girl, were conscious but injured. The third victim was a man who was pronounced dead by a Kulai hospital paramedic who was also dispatched to the scene,” Kulai Fire and Rescue Station chief Mohd Khairi Zainuddin was quoted as saying.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed their condolences to the family yesterday, assuring the provision of necessary consular assistance to the family of the deceased. The injured victims have since returned home to Singapore.
