A Singaporean man died in an accident on a New Zealand highway on Monday. A statement from the New Zealand police revealed that the car crash occurred on State Highway 6 along Ruatapu Road, near Hokitika on South Island, just after noon.

“The driver of one of the vehicles has died and two other people have moderate injuries,” the police said.

New Zealand news site Stuff.co.nz reported that an official said the fatality was a man from Singapore, who was allegedly behind the wheel of one of the two vehicles involved. But the cause of the accident has not yet been established.

Sergeant Andrew Lyes told Stuff.co.nz that “it appears, on the face of it, that it was a head-on (crash), which would indicate one of the vehicles had crossed the center line.”

“We’re keeping an open mind while the crash investigation continues,” he added.

According to Channel NewsAsia, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Singapore is offering consular assistance to the dead man’s family.

The Straits Times noted that Shin Min Daily News identified the man in a report yesterday, and that his girlfriend confirmed his death in a post on Facebook, which has since been removed.
