Celebrating the accomplishment of procuring a diploma, fresh Temasek Polytechnic graduate Mohamed Aslam Shahul went on a six-day trip to Bali with eight of his friends. Little did he know that he would perish in holiday spot’s pristine waters.
The 21-year-old died had been taking photographs on top of a two-meter high cliff at Nusa Lembongan island in the southeast coast of Bali, but lost his footing after a strong wave hit him, Jakarta Post reports. Aslam tumbled into the sea and drowned — it was believed that he could not swim.
According to The New Paper, some of his friends dived into the waters in an attempt to rescue him but were not able to do so due to strong currents. His body was found five metres deep in the water.
Already crestfallen by the sudden death of Aslam, the dismal situation was exacerbated by the fact that some Indonesian and Singapore media reported that he died mid-selfie.
Friends and family were said to be severely distressed by the false reports. One of his family members has been quoted to say that Aslam had been taking pictures of the sunset when the freak accident occurred.
His body was flown to Singapore on Friday, and was buried at Choa Chu Kang Muslim Cemetery the following afternoon.
