Singaporean film A Yellow Bird to make world premiere at this year’s Cannes

A Yellow Bird is homegrown director K Rajagopal’s first feature film, and it’s been invited in competition to the 55th edition of La Semaine de la Critique (Critics’ Week), a parallel section of the 69th Festival de Cannes. This marks the film’s world premiere, where it will go up against six other first and second features for the section’s top Nespresso Grand Prize, the France 4 Visionary Award and the Camera d’Or.

Its story follows Siva, a 38-year-old Singaporean Indian man recently released from prison after serving eight years for contraband smuggling. Embarking on a journey to seek forgiveness, he fails to find it from his mother, and attempts to track down his ex-wife and daughter to make things right. Along the way, he finds solace from the company of an illegal Chinese worker and discovers a shattering truth about his family.

The award-winning filmmaker’s feature debut joins Boo Junfeng’s second feature, Apprentice, at Cannes.
