When it came to aid and assistance following the earthquake in Turkey, we saw the kindness of people shine. Whether it was recce missions or sending the top dogs (literally) down to help with search and rescue, it’s nice to see that so many people around the world offered their help.
One example is Singaporean Jacintha Phua who wanted to do more than just make a donation.
Having been based in Istanbul since 2021, Jacintha along with two other friends, began raising funds on Feb. 13 to help secure tents for those left homeless from the earthquake.
The three managed to raise more than S$69,000 through the Turkiye Relief Initiative which closed its donation box on Monday.
The funds will be able to cover about 550 four-person tents, according to Phua, who posts updates about the campaign regularly on its page.
She also shared pictures of the exact tent that would be cargoed to the relief center.
“A tent can house at least four people and comes with insulation against the cold. The tents have been reviewed and approved by the Turkish Red Crescent,” she wrote.
The team updated on its page yesterday that the first batch of tents arrived in Turkey on a Singapore Airlines flight after an 11-hour flight from the Lion City.
“With a smooth delivery of this first batch of tents, the next shipment is already in the works! We have placed an even bigger order for 350 more four-person tents today at the same discounted bulk price of 650RMB per piece. This will cost 227,500RMB and will allow at least 1,400 more quake survivors to have a temporary roof over their heads in the wintry cold,” the update read.
The remaining tents will be sent out in batches and on multiple flights out of Beijing in the upcoming days.
