Singapore is top destination, say expats in HSBC survey

Even though Singapore has been spotlighted as one of the most expensive cities in the world, the little red dot has surface to the top as the best place for expats to enjoy an excellent quality of life, financial wellbeing and improved career prospects. La dee dah.

Attributes including Singapore’s safe environment, confidence in the local economy and the quality of life for their children were noted as some of the best reasons to live in the Southeast Asian city-state.

Singapore attracts expats looking to learn new skills and earn higher wages — Nearly 59 percent of expats say the city-state is a good place for career advancement, while 53 percent note that the chance to acquire new skills at work is better than at home. Nearly a third of expats in Singapore work in banking, insurance or financial services, reflecting its place as one of the major financial hubs in Asia.

Although living in the country is expensive, expat earnings are high — an average expat salary of USD159,000 a year puts the country well above the global average of USD104,000. As a result, nearly two thirds of expats enjoy a greater level of disposable income than at home, while 60 percent of them are able to save more, compared with only 16 percent who admitted they save less.

More than two thirds of expats say they’ve enjoyed a rise in their quality of life since moving. Exercise is one reason for this improvement, as 55% of expats have become more physically active since living in Singapore. Watersports, team games like rugby and other offer ways to stay active.

For expat parents, the like Singapore for the clear benefits for their families, with almost two thirds stating their children’s health and wellbeing has improved since moving here. A whopping 87 percent of expats laud Singapore’s level of safety.

New Zealand, Sweden, Bahrain and Germany are the other countries ranked by expats in the top five overall destinations. Sweden is apparently a good place to raise a family; Germany and Bahrain gets points for their economy; New Zealand for the experience and probably for the Lord Of The Rings scenery.
