Unlike the past 54 National Day parades, this year’s independence day celebrations will take place solely online due to the coronavirus, with back-to-back events streamed live.

Starting on the morning of Aug. 9, everything from fireworks over 10 locations and military displays to online workouts will be broadcast live over television and the net to a nation staying at home, the National Day Parade organizing committee announced today.

“This year’s NDP will be a landmark one – for the first time since our independence, instead of bringing Singaporeans to a location, we will bring NDP across the island into every Singaporean home,” said Brig. Gen. Frederick Choo, committee chairman.

The theme of this year’s celebration is “Together, A Stronger Singapore.”

“Just like the past 54 NDPs, NDP2020 will be an unyielding reminder that Singapore will keep going on. COVID-19 will not deter us and we will continue to celebrate, but differently. Let us emerge from our challenges a stronger and more united Singapore,” he added.

National Day goodie bags, filled with flags and torch filters, will be distributed to all households.

Other celebration mainstays that will take place this year include the prime minister’s National Day message, aerial displays of the state flag and an appearance by the Red Lions paratrooper team.

In the evening, feature films and live performances will be streamed from The Star Performing Arts Centre.
