Singapore teen arrested for killing father remanded, still not granted access to defense lawyer

The 19-year-old who is accused of killing his father has been remanded further for a week while police investigations continue.

Sylesnar Seah Jie Kai was charged yesterday with the murder of Eddie Seah Wee Teck, 47, who was found dead in a stairwell of Block 653, Yishun Avenue 4 on Monday.

According to reports, the court today rejected the defense lawyer’s request to meet with the teen as the investigations are still in the “infancy stage.” No cause of death has been revealed.

Seah appeared in court virtually on video in a red polo tee and disheveled hair.

Defence lawyer Sunil Sudheesan argued that Seah should be made aware of his rights from the murder charge.

“This is a 19-year-old boy, what is wrong with him knowing his rights? I say you should allow it to advance our justice system. I am disappointed that the prosecution is objecting, that is all,” Sudheesan said in court.

The prosecution assured Sudheesan that he would eventually speak to Seah but not at the moment. District Judge Terence Tay then ordered Seah to be remanded but asked the prosecution to pass the Law Society pamphlet of rights, which lays out one’s legal rights, to Seah ASAP.

Seah said in court that the sentence, whether he will be facing the death penalty or life imprisonment, “will not make much of a difference” before getting cut off by the judge who said this was “unsuitable” to be discussed in court this early.

Police were alerted to the blood bath at around 7:05pm and found the father lying motionless outside a housing unit. A witness told reporters that the father, who was covered in blood, had knocked on her door for help before collapsing.

If convicted of murder, Seah could face the death penalty.

The case will be heard again on Oct. 20.
