Singapore People’s Party leader Chiam See Tong to set up new charity foundation

Veteran politician Chiam See Tong, leader of the Singapore People’s Party, is still doing what he does best at the golden age of 81. Earlier today, the Registry of Societies confirmed that he applied to set up a foundation as far back as last November, and a reply is due early next month.

The aim of this foundation (humbly named after him, to boot) is to provide financial assistance to those who hope continue with their ambitions but fail to fit the bill in the current system.

While any comments were denied by his wife, Lina Chiam, TODAY understands that local swimming icon Ang Peng Siong – whose father previously coached Mr Chiam during his time in Anglo-Chinese School – has been slated to fill the position of chairman of the foundation’s Board of Governors.

On the other hand, Mr Jose Raymond, managing director of communications agency SPIN, will take up the role of deputy chairman. According to his statement on Facebook, Mr Chiam had “provided financial help to his family during the 1980s, which allowed them to purchase a HDB flat.”

Social media responded positively to this news, with some hailing him as “the best and most constructive Opposition MP ever.”
