Singapore named happiest country in Asia, 22nd in the world

What’s with all these surveys and the need to rank everything in the world? Are we not contented just being who we are, without endlessly comparing ourselves to our counterparts?

This latest comes courtesy of the World Happiness Report 2016, produced by the Sustainable Development Solutions Network for the United Nations. It takes into account factors like per capita Gross Domestic Product, healthy life expectancy and freedom from corruption.

After polling approximately 3,000 people in each country and asking them to rank their lives across 11 categories from a scale of 0 to 10, the survey announced Denmark as the happiest place in the world. Not Disney. Or Switzerland, which came in top last year. This time, it took the runner-up spot, followed by Iceland, Norway, Finland, Canada, Netherlands, New Zealand, Australia, and Sweden.

Singapore clinched the 22nd position, making us the happiest country in the Asia-Pacific region. Thailand was next, at 33rd place, with Taiwan at 35th and Malaysia at 47th.

In view of all the recent polls with varying results, one netizen’s comment says it best.
